How to Choose the Right Carpenter for Home Projects in Ireland
Carpenters and joiners handle everything from fitted wardrobes to structural beams. Here is how to find and choose the right one for your home project in Ireland.
Carpentry and joinery work covers an enormous range of home projects — from fitting a door to building a bespoke kitchen. Finding the right carpenter for your specific job is essential to getting the result you want. Types of Carpentry Work in Ireland Understanding what type of carpenter you need helps you find the right person: First fix carpentry: Structural work — floor joists, roof timbers, stud walls, door frames, window frames. Done before plastering. Second fix carpentry: Fitting work — doors, skirting boards, architraves, stairs, built-in furniture. Done after plastering. Joinery: Workshop-made timber products — bespoke cabinets, staircases, windows, fitted wardrobes, kitchen units. Outdoor carpentry: Decking, garden buildings, fencing, pergolas. What to Look for in a Carpenter Relevant experience: Ask specifically about your type of project. A carpenter who specialises in roofing may not be the best choice for bespoke fitted wardrobes. Portfolio: Request photos of completed work — ideally from projects similar to yours. References: Ask for contact details of previous clients you can speak to directly. Insurance: Public liability insurance is essential. Check the certificate. Material knowledge: A good carpenter will advise you on the best timber grades, engineered wood options, and finishes for your budget.
